Fire Rings Going From San Diego

San Diego is reportedly going ahead with the removal of 186 fire rings from city beaches as part of its effort to deal with current budget problems.  Savethefirepits.com details the issues and discusses local efforts to save the fire pits.

   UPDATE: An anonymous donor has given the city $259,500 to fund the city’s beach fire pits until 2010. Thank you Anonymous!

   For better or worse, this isn’t uncommon in San Diego. A few years back during a similar budget crisis an anonymous donor stepped up to save the Clairemont city pool, where I swam at the time, from an extended ‘maintenance closure.’
